Sensible alternatives

Sensible is built for large production pipelines, and its first paid plan is $499 a month, so smaller teams often look for something lighter.

Quick answer

For developers who want JSON from documents without a $499 a month plan, doc2json is the cheaper pick: 50 free pages a month, listed plans from $9 a month, a REST API and an MCP server.

Each tool

Strengths and trade-offs

Short and fair. Every tool here is a good pick for someone.

  • doc2json

A small API that turns a PDF, PNG, JPEG or text into JSON. You pay per page, and a schema is optional.

    • 50 free pages a month with no card, and a Playground that works without an account.
    • One credit is one page, so cost is easy to predict.
    • Hosted MCP server, so an agent can parse a file with one tool call.
    • No email inbox, webhooks or Zapier app for documents.
    • No human review queue and no compliance certifications.
  • Sensible

A document extraction platform that mixes AI with rule-based methods, aimed at production pipelines in insurance, finance and logistics.

    • 150+ prebuilt configurations for common industry documents.
    • Billed per document, not per page, which helps with long PDFs.
    • SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA are listed, and the team can run the extraction backend for you.
    • The first paid plan is $499 a month, with no free plan after the trial.
    • Configs take some setup, which is more than a quick project needs.
  • LlamaParse

LlamaIndex's document platform. Parse turns files into markdown for LLMs, and Extract pulls fields into a schema you define.

    • Built for complex layouts like tables and charts, with 130+ file formats.
    • Extract adds citations and confidence, and SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and GDPR are listed.
    • Low cost per page on the cheapest Extract tier (8 credits a page, at $1.25 per 1,000 credits).
    • Credit math varies by tier: Extract is 8, 25 or 60 credits a page by default.
    • The jump from the $50 Starter plan to the $500 Pro plan is large.
  • Parseur

A no-code parser built around mailboxes. You forward emails and attachments to Parseur, it pulls out the fields, and sends them on to your apps.

    • Email mailboxes are the core of the product, which suits order and lead emails.
    • Two engines: AI for varied layouts and templates for fixed ones.
    • A free plan, many integrations and a hosted MCP server.
    • Per-page price is high at low volume: $49 for 100 pages, $89 for 300.
    • Some features, such as Python post-processing, start at the 10,000-page plans.
  • Docparser

A rule-based parser. You build parsing rules for a layout in the app, then send documents by upload, email, cloud storage or the REST API.

    • Rule builder with zonal OCR, anchor keywords and table extraction.
    • One credit covers a document of up to 5 pages.
    • Many ways out: Excel, CSV, JSON, XML, Google Sheets and integrations.
    • No free plan after the 14-day trial.
    • A new layout often means new rules, which takes time to maintain.

Why doc2json

One request, typed JSON back.

Send a file and a schema name to the REST API. You get the values back as JSON, and anything not in the document comes back as null instead of a guess.

  • One credit per page, and an image is one page.
  • The schema is optional. Leave it out to get the fields it finds.
  • The file is read for the parse and then dropped. Only a usage record is kept.
  • The same parse runs from an agent through the MCP server.
POST /api/v1/parse
curl -X POST https://doc2json.manoonlabs.com/api/v1/parse \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $DOC2JSON_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d "{\"file_base64\": \"$(base64 -w0 invoice.pdf)\", \"schema\": \"invoice\"}"

Honest fit

When not to pick doc2json

  • You need HIPAA, a signed BAA or a compliance audit. doc2json does not hold compliance certifications.
  • You need a human review queue where people check and fix fields before they go downstream. doc2json returns JSON and leaves review to your code.
  • You want a vendor team to build and run extraction configs for you. Sensible offers that, doc2json is self-serve.

FAQ

Sensible alternatives, answered.

What is a cheaper alternative to Sensible?

doc2json has a free plan with 50 pages a month and listed paid plans at $9, $29 and $79 a month. LlamaParse also has a free monthly credit allowance. Sensible's first paid plan is $499 a month for 750 documents.

Does doc2json bill per page or per document?

Per page. One credit is one page and an image counts as one page. Sensible bills per document, so it can work out cheaper for very long PDFs.

Do I need to write a config or schema in doc2json?

No. A schema is optional. Send one to get exactly your keys and types, or send none and get the fields the model finds. Values that are not in the document come back as null.

Does doc2json have an MCP server like Sensible?

Yes. doc2json runs a hosted MCP server with a parse_document tool, so an agent in Cursor or Claude Code can parse a file with your saved schemas.

Is doc2json HIPAA compliant?

No. doc2json does not hold HIPAA or other compliance certifications. If you need that, pick a vendor that lists it, such as Sensible or LlamaParse.
